Great App But Could Use More User Control Of Selecting Or Defining Serving Sizes
I really like this app. I use it for calorie counting. It links to Garmin Connect for integrating exercise calories into the overall balance for the day. You can scan barcodes for food items for easier logging. You can select items from your history of previous entries . You can text search for foods, which accesses an enormous list of prior entries that I assume have been entered or scanned by other users. So why only four stars? My only peeve with the program is that it doesnt seem to let users edit the serving size for many items, beyond being able to select from a too often extremely limited and sometimes arbitrary mix of imperial/metric/liquid/solid measures. The options presented vary widely from item to item, with little apparent logic. The best solution I have is to try to find items that use 1g as a serving size and then list the number of grams for that days serving as the number of servings for that entry. Since Im using a food scale, that works for me. Seems a better solution would be to allow users to edit any food item to select from a full complement of serving sizes . Or just provide 1g as a choice in all cases . In any case, I love and recommend the app, with the measurement detail being my only pet peeve.
How To Choose A Calorie Counter App
Below are some features that people looking for a calorie counter app may wish to consider:
- Price: Many calorie counter apps are available for free, but some require individuals to subscribe to a premium membership to access additional features. Some offer more than one subscription plan, so a person should check which one works best for them.
- Reviews: People can read customer reviews on the App Store and check if other users have found the calorie counter app effective. These reviews may help an individual decide whether or not an app is suitable for them.
- Food logging: A person should check how the app they are interested in using requires them to log the foods they eat. Many apps have a scanner so that users can scan barcodes on packaged food for easy logging.
- Compatibility: Most apps work on Android and Apple devices. Some are also compatible with fitness trackers.
Myplate Calorie Tracker Best Advanced Calorie Counter App
MyPlate Calorie Tracker is another excellent app for those looking for a complete data and chart representation of their daily food intake. The app also includes several workout exercises to do at home for those who dont want to go to the gym. Livestrong, the apps developers, also offer a separate interface for the PC.
However, you may feel that the food data is less comprehensive than other popular apps like MyFitnessPal or YAZIO. However, MyPlate Calorie Tracker makes up for this by recording net carbohydrate, salt, cholesterol, and saturated fat intake, which most other calorie and fitness tracker apps dont offer. The app also provides support from its community members.

Have you ever been to a gym or a nutritionist, where they asked you many questions about your health preferences so that they can understand you better? The Lose It app does exactly that. We took around full ten minutes to set up the app while we answered questions about our dietary and other health preferences. This is why it is our favorite calorie counter app for iPhone.
Take a look at the image below, seven parameters are used to suggest you a meal plan. It then suggests the number of calories that you need to eat so that you fulfill the demands of your set plan.
Apart from that, we also like how the nutrients and calories are presented. Along with Lifesum, this wins our recommendation for user interface and performance. The breakdown of your meals is indeed very easy to view and understand. The ads are quite minimal on the free version too. And unlike other apps, the meal planner is free.
Moreover, the food database on Lose It! contains all popular restaurants, grocery stores, and brand-name items, all of which have been confirmed by the apps professional team. This ensures a good amount of accuracy for tracking calories. You also have an active chat community and you can take part in multiple challenges too.

How Can You Count Calories Without An App
Before calorie counter apps were a thing, there were multiple techniques or tools that helped account for a days worth of calories, which you could try if you find calorie-counting apps too tedious or burdensome.
Common tools include (
- measuring utensils like tablespoons and measuring cups
- hand measures like the size of your palm or fist or the width of your fingers
- food models that help compare food with different-sized objects like golf balls or decks of cards
Still, keep in mind that whether you rely on an app or not, calorie counting is more of an estimation than an exact measurement. In both cases, practice and patience are needed to improve your estimates.
Calorie counting apps may be safe for some people but are not recommended for those with a history of disordered eating. Theyre also not 100% accurate, primarily due to human error. You can always try other tools to estimate your caloric intake.

Can Counting Calories Help Me Lose Weight
Many experts and studies point to counting calories as one of the best ways to lose weight. However, it’s often more complex than that, and a sustainable plan should include a broader approach to diet and exercise, with a goal of losing no more than one or two pounds per week.
By tracking the number of calories youre consuming and burning, you can get motivated to hold yourself accountable and succeed in your weight loss goals. But any such plan still should start with a consultation with a doctor or registered dietitian. If you have any history of disordered eating, calorie counting could be dangerous.
