Should You Eat The Orange Peel

How much does an orange weigh?

Orange peels are not poisonous, and as many cooks know, orange zest can pack a big flavor punch. But although orange peels are edible, they are not nearly as sweet or as juicy as the pulp. They can also be difficult to digest, and unless you’re eating a peel from an organic orange, it could be covered in chemicals.

If you do eat the peel, you’ll get a good amount of nutrients. “The peel actually contains more fibre and Vitamin C than the flesh of the fruit,” Thornton-Wood said. “It also contains the polyphenols which are linked to prevention of many chronic diseases such as diabetes.”

According to Thornton-Wood, extra precautions should be made if you want to eat an oranges peel. “Always wash well first in hot water to remove any pesticide residue and only consume small quantities as they can be hard to digest,” she said.

Flavonoids are also present in the peel. These compounds are found in many foods, such as fruits and vegetables, grains, tea and wine and are known to lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation, according to a 2016 article published in the Journal of Nutritional Science.

Additionally, orange peels contain calcium, several B vitamins, and vitamins A and C. You can get the same nutrients by eating the inner part of the peel and leaving the tough outer part.

Nutritional Value Of Orange Juice

One of the most searched-for questions on juice is what vitamins are in oranges? This is a great question! Many people know that orange juice is healthy. But few know the exact nutritional value of oranges.

Keep in mind that we are using fresh whole oranges to make the juice. So, the nutritional composition will look different from store-bought orange juice.

First, a single fresh medium orange contains about 62 calories. Thats surprisingly low for such a sweet fruit.

It is completely fat-free, contains about 3 grams of fiber , and is very low in protein . In total, one orange contains 15 grams of carbohydrates.

Now, oranges are exceptionally high in vitamin C. But exactly how much is a lot? A single orange contains 116% of your recommended daily intake for vitamin C. Thats an incredible amount!

Then, oranges are also high in vitamin A, thiamine, folate, and potassium.

Other note-worthy nutrients oranges contain include vitamin B6, calcium, and magnesium.

Now, because I add honey to my fresh made orange juice, the calorie and carb count will be higher. And, if you dont want a high-calorie juice, remove the honey completely.

Are There Drawbacks To Eating Oranges

Eating oranges is not only safe its encouraged. That said, oranges are an acidic fruit, and those who suffer from GERD a condition in which the stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus may experience discomfort after eating oranges. In addition, individuals with kidney disease are usually advised to stay away from foods that are high in potassium, like oranges, since their kidneys cannot process the mineral.

The Peel Has A Lot Of Purposes

Think twice about tossing that orange peel. Although it may seem useless, the orange peel holds a ton of flavor and has many culinary purposes. The easiest way to use the peel is to use a microplane to grate it into a flavorful zest. Add the zest to baked goods or a warm bowl of oatmeal. The peel also adds flavor to drinks, and it looks beautiful lining the rim of a glass for a cocktail or hot tea. You can also add the whole peel to simmering soups, jams and jellies for a citrusy flavor. Lastly, for a sweet treat, make a simple candied orange peel.

Are There Any Risks

Oranges are great for you, but you should enjoy them in moderation, Thornton-Wood said. Eating in large quantities “could give you gastrointestinal symptoms if you are sensitive to the high fiber content, so best to have no more than one a day,” she said. “Some people find it exacerbates reflux so avoid at night if this is the case.”

It is possible to consume too much vitamin C an excess of this nutrient may lead to diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, bloating or cramps, headaches and insomnia, according to the Mayo Clinic.

People who are taking beta-blockers should be careful not to consume too many fruits that are high in potassium, such as oranges and bananas, according to the American Heart Association. These medicines increase potassium levels and, if mixed with large amounts of potassium-rich foods, can lead to an excess of potassium in the body. This is a significant concern for people whose kidneys are not fully functional, as the additional potassium will not be effectively removed from the body.

An electric juicer will make the process much easier, and quicker. If you have an electric juicer, simply cut the oranges in a quarter and juice them. The pulp and seeds will be collected in a container, if you want pulp-free juice, you can strain the juice a second time. I personally like a little bit of pulp in my orange juice, but its up to you!

Health Risks Of Oranges

How many calories in Orange?//How many calories in Grapefruit?//Orange is rich in Vitamin C

Sometimes you can get too much of a good thing. Though this mainly applies to the supplement form, too much vitamin C at one time could give your body more fiber and sugar than it needs.

Watch out for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, headache, and insomnia.

Oranges are high in acid, and that can make symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease worse.

If youââ¬â¢re taking beta-blockers, too many oranges could increase your potassium intake and lead to kidney damage.

If your body stores more iron than it needs, a condition called hemochromatosis, high doses of vitamin C can add more iron and damage your tissues.

Vitamin C may also increase absorption from medicines that contain aluminum, like phosphate binders, and increase your estrogen levels if you’re on hormone replacement therapy.

As for orange juice, you might get some extra sugar and lose some fiber in the trade-off. Too much fruit juice can also lead to weight gain, which can raise your risk of heart disease, especially in middle age. But both whole oranges and their juice are good for you.

The Health Benefits Of Eating Oranges

Lets start with a well-known fact: Eating an orange provides you with a heaping dose of vitamin C, a nutrient that is most recognized for its role in immune health. Vitamin C protects the body against foreign invaders, and research suggests that having enough vitamin C in the diet may prevent and treat infections. Insufficient amounts of vitamin C in the diet can cause scurvy a condition that is rare in modern times, but is accompanied by weakness, fatigue, anemia and frequent infections.

Oranges are also a good source of potassium, a mineral that works to regulate blood pressure and fluid balance within the body. Because most Americans dont meet their daily potassium needs , the 20152020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans lists potassium as a nutrient of concern. Research shows that having adequate potassium in the diet is associated with lower blood pressure levels, reduced cardiovascular disease risk and decreased chance of having a stroke.

Oranges also contain an antioxidant called hesperidin, which suppresses inflammation and has been linked to cardiovascular health, immune health, cognitive function and bone health. The majority of the hesperidin in oranges is found in the peel. Since a whole orange is squeezed to make a glass of OJ, hesperidin is most abundant in orange juice.

Creative Ways To Benefit From Oranges

Whole oranges are more filling and provide more fiber than orange zest or orange juicebut there are lots of ways to incorporate the benefits of oranges into your diet.

Oranges are fantastic as is, but you can also add them to overnight oats, garden salads, stir-fry, chilled whole-grain dishes, savory lettuce wraps, and slaw. When you’re eating an orange as a snack, you could combine it with nuts or seeds, cheese or yogurt, or herbed olives. And mix it up by incorporating different varieties, including navel, blood, and mandarin.

Add orange zest to homemade salad dressing, or as a garnish for oatmeal, fruit salad, or avocado toast. You can also sprinkle some orange zest on cooked veggies, quinoa, stir-fries, and desserts.

Pure orange juice can be added to a stir-fry sauce, marinade, or soup. Consider using orange juice to make cocktails or mocktails, or freeze in an ice cube tray and add to water along with mint or ginger.

Storage And Food Safety

Oranges don’t ripen much after they’ve been picked, so keeping unpeeled, whole fruits in the fridge can help them last for a few weeks as opposed to about a week on the counter. Once peeled and/or sectioned, keep orange slices in the fridge. Wrapped tightly or sealed in an air-tight container, they’ll last about three to four days.
