Your Breath Might Smell Weird

11 Carbs You Should Be Eating to Lose Weight FAST | Joanna Soh

Myth: All Carbs Are Created Equal

Fact: There are simple and complex carbohydrates

The main reason is that when people think carbs they think starch, like white rice, pasta, potatoes or white bread, says Bowerman. While many refined carbs dont offer up much nutritionally, there are lots of good carbs healthy foods that provide carbohydrates your body absolutely needs every day to function properly.

In actuality there are three types of carbohydrates: fiber, sugar and starch. Where things get confusing is when we look at specific foods, which can contain different types of carbohydrates. They can either be labeled simple or complex based on their chemical makeup. Complex carbs contain a complex chain of sugars as well as some fiber, protein and/or healthy fats, vitamins and minerals, says Rebecca Lewis, registered dietitian at HelloFresh. The presence of fiber, protein and fats is important because it slows digestion, prevents a spike in our blood-sugar levels, and helps us to feel full and satisfied for longer .

Thats why carbohydrate-containing foods like starchy vegetables, legumes and whole grains are included in many healthy diet plans.

Follow the 10:1 rule: Choose foods where for every 10 grams of carbs, there is 1 gram of fiber.

The simple carbs, often found in processed foods and drinks, are easier for the body to break down, meaning they dont keep you full as long and can lead to erratic blood sugar levels.

Thats not to say that simple carbs are always bad for us.

Why The Carb Hate

So why all the negative press on carbohydrates if theres no true benefit to cutting them out, AND they are our bodies first choice when it comes to providing energy? In MY opinion, it is an idea that was good at its inception, but has turned into something rather extreme. The main issue with carbohydrates is we are able to eat a significant amount of calories in carbohydrates without experiencing satiety in terms of appetite . So the idea at the start was limiting your intake of these kinds of dishes, and adding in some lean proteins to try and help with overall satiety which I agree with. However, somewhere along the way this idea took a turn for the worse and we started to develop this idea that carbohydrates were innately bad and we should just cut them out of our diet completely. This is where I disagree.

In tackling the issue of carbohydrates we have to understand that they arent super filling. Even the more complex carbohydrates vs. the simple sugar carbohydrates just wont help satiety as much as a lean protein would. And that is the exact solution to the issue. You want the carbohydrates in your diet to provide you with ample energy, but you dont want to overindulge, so just pair your carbohydrates with something more filling like that lean protein that we mentioned, and maybe even some low starch veggies that will also help aid satiety without accruing a big calorie intake.

Carbs Are Not The Enemy

In todays world, we are surrounded by foods that contain highly processed carbs, which makes it challenging at times to identify healthy options. But the answer isnt necessarily to swear off carbs altogether because they are an essential part of our diets. They provide fuel for our bodies and contain fiber, which helps you digest foods. The trick is to eat more whole carbohydrates, such as vegetables, beans, potatoes and whole grains. Eat refined carbs less frequently, including white bread, pastries, pastas, sugary soft drinks, pizza and other fast foods.

Start Your Day With Slow Carbs For Breakfast

Breakfast is a good time to refuel your body with slow-burning carbs. Following an overnight fast, blood-sugar and muscle-glycogen levels are low, and your body must replenish them. Research also shows that by consuming carbs along with your protein first thing in the morning, your body is less likely to stimulate fat storage. In a study at Virginia Commonwealth University , researchers compared the diets of 94 obese, physically inactive women. Subjects were divided into two diet groups, both of which were low in fat and total calories but differed in carbohydrate distribution.

A group of 46 women followed a very strict low-carb diet, consuming 1,085 calories a day comprised of 17 grams of carbs, 51 grams of protein and 78 grams of fat. The smallest meal was breakfast at 290 calories and included only 7 grams of carbs. The other 48 subjects followed a modified low-carb or big-breakfast diet, consuming 1,240 calories a day comprised of 97 grams of carbs , 93 grams of protein and 46 grams of fat. After eight months, those eating the modified low-carb big-breakfast diet lost more than 21% of their bodyweight the very strict low-carb group lost just 4.5% . Whats more, the women who ate a big breakfast reported feeling less hungry, especially before lunch, and had fewer carb cravings than the strict low-carb dieters.
