Protein Sources On A High Carb Low Fat Diet
Before I discuss protein sources, lets talk about how much protein to eat per day. Protein recommendations can vary quite a bit depending upon the source.
The Dietary Reference Intake recommends .36 grams of protein per pound of body weight.
- 64 grams of protein per day for a 180-pound man.
- 46 grams of protein per day for a 130-pound woman.
This number likely looks lower than you might expect. This is also almost exactly the protein number that an HCLF vegan diet would hit.
A common recommendation for gaining muscle is 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. This is triple the DRI recommendation.
For gaining muscle at the fastest possible rate, it is likely that you will want to eat more than the DRI recommendation. This doesnt mean that you need to eat three times the recommended amount.
The most comprehensive book on protein is written by Brad Pilon and is titled: Eat Stop Eat How Much Protein.
This book looks at dozens of studies regarding protein.
What Is Considered High Protein
There is some variation in what percentage is considered high protein but generally 20% to 40% can be considered high. Wikipedia defines a high protein meal or diet as more than 20 percent of calories from protein, while Diet Doctor uses 25 percent to 35 percent of calories from protein.
High protein, low-carb meals focus on lean sources of protein like chicken, beef, seafood, eggs, and low-fat dairy products. They also include low-carb veggies or fruit, like broccoli, asparagus or berries, and healthy sources of fat like avocadoes, nuts, and olive oil.

Low Fat Diets are for the anemic, sick-looking muscleless types, right? Well, some implementations of it could give you that opinion. The most famous versions of low fat diets are those of Ornish, Esselstyn and Pritikin and these all are low protein, high carb, low fat diets. Now I have incredible respect for all of these men in fact, I have no doubt that their research has probably saved my life but Ive never really eaten that kind of Low Fat Diet. The reason? Im just too interested in muscle building and trying to improve my physique.
I remember looking at their recommended protein levels and thinking, Well, no way Im doing that! To me it just seemed obvious that one could build upon a standard Low Fat Diet and just substitute some extra protein for all of those carbohydrates. After all, a standard Low Fat Diet relies on a monstrous amount of carbs during maintenance mode, i.e. when you are not gaining or losing weight.
If you run the numbers, an Ornish/Esselstyn type of Low Fat Diet requires a man to consume around 500 grams of carbs per day. To me, that seems like a lot, especially for the typical sedentary, office-working male yeah, like me! in modern America. While I do exercise every day and my youngest son keeps me moving, I am pretty sedentary overall. 500 grams seems like an awful lot, unless you can somehow burn it off.

Can You Lose Weight With A High
Yes, absolutely, but the macronutrient breakdown of your diet isnt likely going to be a magic bullet for weight loss. Each person will need a unique amount of nutrients based on activity level, age, lifestyle, etc. but if your goal is to lose weight, there are safe and healthy ways to do that with a high-protein, low-carb diet.
My recommendation would be to consult with a nutritionist, macro coach, or doctor about how to eat this way in a safe way to lose weight.

Common Concerns About High Protein Diets
According to some scientists and outdated published articles, high protein diets can be harmful to your kidneys, bones, and blood sugar. Some even believe that higher-protein diets lead to higher rates of cancer.23
With respect to kidney health and protein intake, it is well-recognized that people with severe chronic kidney disease should restrict protein intake. Dietary protein will not, however, cause kidney dysfunction in people with healthy kidneys.24
With respect to bone health in older adults, it was previously believed that high protein intake would lead to osteoporosis via inducing chronic metabolic acidosis . Multiple studies have since failed to show that high protein intake causes loss of bone density and fractures.25 In fact, protein may even help bone health.26
Another concern with a high protein diet especially for those on a low-carb diet is that the amino acids in dietary protein could cause a significant rise in blood sugar.27 According to studies, however, the opposite may be true, and increased protein may improve blood sugar.28
With respect to lifespan, data from flies, mice, and other animals suggest that restricting protein may increase longevity, while human data are very weak.29 We need to consume adequate protein to prevent loss of muscle tissue and frailty as we age, so restricting that nutrient in order to increase lifespan may not benefit general health.

Why It’s A Bad Idea For People Living With Diabetes
Keto and the like are even worse for people with diabetes! This is another place where short-term results are deceptive, because by reducing your intake of carbs/sugar, you do notice a clear decrease in your blood sugar levels!
However, the cost is that you’re drastically increasing your insulin resistance, which means that any return to eating foods high in carbohydrates will skyrocket your sugar levels, lead to weight gain, and can leave you in a worse place than you were before you tried low carb diets!

Food With High Carb And Protein
In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of high carb and protein foods.
This is a common question for people who are trying to lose weight or maintain their weight. Its not surprising that people have this question, given the many conflicting messages about what types of foods are best for us.
The truth is that there isnt one magic bullet when it comes to nutrition. There are many different factors that go into determining how healthy a persons diet is and how it affects their body composition. The most important factor is overall energy balancemeaning that you need to be eating fewer calories than you burn off each day in order to lose weight over time.
Its also important to note that there are many different kinds of proteins out there. Many people think only red meat contains protein, but there are plenty of plant-based sources as well!

Although its important to eat dietary fats you shouldnt be reaching for the lard or palm oilsame goes for protein and carbs.
Other Pillars Of Mastering Diabetes
Apart from eating a low-fat, plant-based, whole-food diet, there are three major pillars of the Mastering Diabetes Method.
The second is intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting is another great way to lose weight and reduce your insulin resistance through regular periods of calorie restriction, and it has great results for your overall health too!
The third is daily movement, which helps keep your body full of energy, and creates a positive healthy feedback loop where your cells demand more energy, you burn more fat, you lose weight and feel better, and then movement becomes more fun — starting the cycle again!
And finally, our fourth component of the Mastering Diabetes Method in addition to the low-fat, high carb diet is decision trees, which are a great way to track your process and your progress as you take your life back from diabetes.

When To Consume Protein
In general, the body can only process so much protein at one time. For maximum benefit consume 25 to 30 grams of protein with meals and snacks throughout the day. You could break 150g of protein down into three meals and two snacks each consisting of 30g of protein. Its important to consume protein as part of your first meal of the day. Especially if youre trying to maintain muscle mass.
How exactly you structure your protein intake is up to you and will vary based on your food preferences, whether you work from home or office, live in a van, or have other dietary restrictions. One thing that will help you consume enough protein is being intentional about your meal choices and meal prepping. If you leave your nutrition up to whatever you come across, holiday cookies, the office birthday cake, and french fries will find their way into your life. If youre serious about getting in shape, staying in shape, and hitting your macronutrient goals, fill your fridge with healthy foods. Youll quickly find youre more easily filling your stomach with them, too.

Ideally, you will aim for whole-grain versions of bread, oatmeal, and pasta most of the time. Look for the words whole grain on the packaging of these items. The words whole wheat dont necessarily have the same benefit.
Its fine to eat some refined carbs but is healthier long-term when whole foods make up the majority of the diet.
Thermic Effect Of Food
Protein has a high thermic effect compared to other macronutrients, so it has a high energy cost to break down and digest. Carbs and fats use about 10% of the foods energy to break it down whereas protein uses up to 30% of the foods calories to break it down.
When a food has a higher thermic effect, it means there are fewer calories to be able to store as body fat. This can indirectly increase the calorie deficit and promote weight loss.1

What Are The Benefits Of A High Carb Low Fat Diet
The high carb low-fat diet is heavily weighted towards fruits and vegetables. Not only are these loaded with vitamins and minerals, but they also contain phytonutrients that you cant get when you simply take vitamins in pill format.
According to the Mayo Clinic, supplements shouldnt take the place of whole foods:
Supplements arent intended to substitute for food. They cant replicate all of the nutrients and benefits of whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables.
Here are some of the benefits of eating an HCLF diet.
The Rise Of Macro Counting
In recent years, the common person trying to get a handle on their health has moved past just counting calories to something called macro counting.
Macro counting is a method of counting macros, or “macronutrients,” which are protein, fats, and carbohydrates. This approach to choosing a diet has gained popularity because it allows people to eat until they are full, rather than feeling like they need to limit themselves on portions, as long as they maintain a target balance of proteins, fats, and carbs.
