Carbohydrates And Low Glycemic Index Diets

Dietary carbohydrates can be divided into simple or complex CHO. While a low carbohydrate, high protein diet may appear to be attractive to patients with MS, extreme carbohydrate restriction can have deleterious effects of glycogen store depletion and precipitate a ketogenic effect.21

The Glycemic Index is defined as the incremental area under the blood glucose curve following ingestion of a test food, expressed as a percentage of the corresponding area following an equivalent load of a reference carbohydrate, either glucose or white-wheat bread.22,23 Foods are hence ranked on their ability to raise postprandial blood glucose. Numerous factors may influence the GI: the type of carbohydrate, fat protein, water content of food, and the presence of soluble or insoluble fibers.21

High GI foods raise postprandial blood glucose levels with accompanying hyperinsulinemia to a greater degree than lower GI alternatives, which give a more stable diurnal blood glucose profile, blunting postprandial hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia, while mitigating late postprandial rebounds in circulating free fatty acids.24 Furthermore, low-GI foods are often rich in fiber which slows gastrointestinal transit, resulting in increased secretion of anti-satiety hormones such as cholecystokinin, glucagon, ghrelin, and glucagon-like-peptide 1.21,25

The Long Term Heart Health Risks

However, the results have begun to show that this high-fat diet is actually a terrible idea for heart health, and people on a low carbohydrate diet have been shown to have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease.

When you really think about it, this makes sense because diets high in fat increase the production of cholesterol.

High levels of LDL are associated with an increased risk of having a heart attack or stroke!

Natural carbs also tend to have a higher nutrient profile than their low-carb counterparts because they usually contain more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. In fact, these foods contain a wider variety of vitamins and minerals that you wouldn’t be able to get from other food groups.

For example, fruits are great sources of many important nutrients like vitamin C, b vitamins, potassium, magnesium, and calcium – all of which have been shown to support energy production in the body!

The Rise Of Macro Counting

In recent years, the common person trying to get a handle on their health has moved past just counting calories to something called macro counting.

Macro counting is a method of counting macros, or “macronutrients,” which are protein, fats, and carbohydrates. This approach to choosing a diet has gained popularity because it allows people to eat until they are full, rather than feeling like they need to limit themselves on portions, as long as they maintain a target balance of proteins, fats, and carbs.

Rice Intake And Weight Change

It is often perceived that starchy foods are associated with weight gain, and a high protein/low carbohydrate diet has become popular for weight loss.25 The quality of the carbohydrate, however, may be more important than the amount, and cumulative evidence suggests that whole grains are beneficial in terms of body weight regulation.26

During the past three decades, the diet in many Asian countries has become Westernized consumption of plant-based staples has decreased while that of high energy density pre-prepared food has increased. In China between 1989 and 2004, rice intake decreased from 348 g/d to 280 g/d a 20% decrease over 15 years.20 During the same period, there was a significant increase in overweight and obesity.20 However, very few studies have assessed the association between rice intake and body weight status worldwide.

Inverse associations between rice consumption and overweight/obesity have been demonstrated in successive phases of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey . In NHANES 19992004, among those aged 1850 years, comparing rice eaters with non-rice eaters, the OR was 0.77 for overweight and 0.83 for obesity.27 This association was independent of ethnicity. In NHANES 20072008, it was found that rice consumption was associated with a lower BMI, smaller waist circumference and tricep skinfold thickness, and lower serum insulin concentrations .

Why High Carb Seems Doubly Scary For People With Diabetes

Rob Lowes High-Protein, Low-Carb Diet

With the recent rise in popularity of macro counting, people living with diabetes are often left wondering how they can manage their diet when it comes to carbs.

After all, many tend to assume that if someone is diabetic or pre-diabetic then they must be on a strict low carb intake plan.

And on the surface level, this might make sense. After all, carbohydrates become glucose, and the main problem with diabetes is a high level of blood glucose.

So shouldn’t you reduce your carb intake in order to fight diabetes?

Benefits Of A High Protein Low Carb Diet

Firstly, there are numerous potential benefits that a diet high in protein and lower in carbohydrate can have.

These are specifically related to weight loss, satiety levels, and improved body composition.

To understand why these benefits occur, we have to examine the function of carbohydrate and protein within the body.

Didnt The Low Fat Diet From The 80s Fail

The problem with the low-fat diets that were popular in the 80s is that they were NOT low fat enough.

Most studies and literature consider 30% fat, a low-fat diet.

In the 80s our low fat diets were around 30% fat.

That is too high in fat to experience many of the benefits listed above.

The only people who stuck to 20% or lower in fat back in the 80s were bodybuilders and fitness competitors before their competition.

They would get super lean by reducing their fats to 10-20% of their diet.

If the rest of the population would have kept fats to 20% or lower, I believe this would be the diet we would still be following today.

The Bottom Line On High Carb Low Fat Vs Low Carb High Fat

At the end of the day, the best diet for you is the one that includes food that is nutritious and that you enjoy eating. Adherence is the greatest factor in the success of any long-term diet.

On the flip side, if you prefer plates of pasta with marinara, gourmet sandwiches with assorted meats, cheeses, and vegetables, or a simple bowl of pho from your favorite Vietnamese restaurant, that can work too.

So, long as you are able to maintain a calorie deficit, consume enough dietary protein, satisfy your micronutrient requirements, and can adhere to your nutrition plan, it doesnt really matter whether you go high carb, low fat or high fat, low carb.

They both can work. Some people simply feel more full eating higher-fat diets, while others feel better eating a higher percentage of carbs and less dietary fat.

In the end, only you know what your body responds best to, and which manner of diet leaves you feeling more satisfied. Right now it might be low fat, high carb, but 5 years from now it could be just the opposite. Just realize that both styles of eating can work for weight loss. Experiment with both styles of dieting and see which one works best for you!

High

The mechanisms behind carb cycling suggest that it can be beneficial for weight loss.

In theory, carb cycling may help you maintain physical performance while encouraging your body to burn fat for energy.

As with any diet, the main mechanism behind weight loss is a calorie deficit, meaning that you eat less than your body burns over a prolonged period .

If you implement a carb cycling diet alongside a calorie deficit, then you will likely lose weight.

However, the complex nature of carb cycling may cause confusion and make it difficult for beginners to stick to the plan.

In contrast, many people may enjoy the flexibility of carb cycling. This could probably improve adherence and long-term success for some people.

Are Carbohydrates Bad For You

Just as fat has been demonized in the past, it appears the same thing is now happening with dietary carbohydrate.

That begs the question are carbohydrates harmful?

The answer is no, but we should clearly differentiate between the different carbohydrate sources.

For instance, a few sweet potatoes and some sauteed spinach? Enjoy them providing theres no medical reason to limit them they arent going to cause harm.

On the other hand, is a diet high in refined carbohydrates supportive of good health?

Not at all.

In fact, the over-consumption of these foods is what is driving much of the obesity and chronic disease epidemics we see today.

The Lazy Keto Diet Could Be The Easiest Version

How It Works The purpose of the so-called lazy keto diet is to make keto easier to follow. Counting calories, fat, and protein intake for some people, thats all too complicated. All you track is carbs in lazy keto, Kizer says.

You should still see results that are similar to regular keto, so long as you keep your carb intake low enough and dont go overboard in the protein department, Kizer says. As long as carbs stay low enough, which will vary by person but is usually below 50 g a day, one will stay in ketosis, Kizer says. As a result, youll be able to see the effects associated with being in the metabolic state.

Who It’s Best For This is meant for those who are interested in ketosis but dont want to be bothered with tracking calories, protein, and fat.

Risks to Note The same people who experts say should stay away from keto in general should also avoid this approach, such as pregnant women, people with diabetes who are using insulin or taking hypoglycemic medication, and people with type 1 diabetes who are at risk for ketoacidosis, Kizer says.

A High Protein Low Carb Diet: A Healthy Plan That Works

Last Updated on November 21, 2018 by Michael Joseph

However, the most harmful of these is likely the standard Western diet that is prevalent in the US and Western Europe.

For one thing, people are eating way too many refined carbohydrates and processed fats.

One potential option that a lot of people find success with is to focus on getting a little more protein and fewer carbs.

In this article, well look at how to formulate a high protein, low carb diet in a healthy way.

The Importance Of Protein

Protein is important for numerous reasons, from its biological function to the impact it has on body composition and even satiety.

Here are some potential benefits of a higher protein intake

  • High protein diets are beneficial for bone health. A systematic review of randomized trials and cohort studies shows that i) optimal protein intake is important for lifelong bone health and ii) protein intake at levels above current recommendations appears to prevent bone mass density loss .
  • High protein meals lead to greater satiety. In comparison to high-fat or high-carbohydrate meals, meals with higher protein content have a higher satiating effect. In other words, protein is the most satiating macronutrient. Greater satiation can lead to a reduction in food consumption, leading to better weight regulation .
  • Foods high in protein are nutrient-dense. Consider all the high-protein foods you can think of eggs, beef, liver, nuts, fish, and seafood. These foods are all incredibly high in beneficial vitamins and minerals, including nutrients, such as preformed vitamin A , that cant be found elsewhere .
  • Improved body composition. As noted in the ISSNs recent position stand, a growing number of studies demonstrate that increasing dietary protein intake above current recommendations improves body composition .

Molecular Basis Of Type Iv Glycogen Storage Disease

1420 Calories Low Carb High Protein Day by @marekfitness Looking for ...

Type IV GSD is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by deficiency of the glycogen branching enzyme , leading to accumulation of amylopectin-like compounds in various tissues. The human GBE cDNA is 3 kb in length, and encodes a 702 amino acid protein. The GBE gene is located on chromosome 3p14 and has 16 exons. Mutations in GBE have been reported.291

Treatment

Three types of treatment, without decided improvement, were used for one patient.292 First, a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet with corn oil added to the milk fat caused no change in weight gain or in the progression of cirrhosis. Second, with progression of the disease, treatment with purified -glucosidase from Aspergillus niger was given for 6 days. This treatment resulted in a striking decrease in hepatic glycogen content, from 10% to 2%. Although no unfavorable reaction occurred, liver size did not decrease. Glycogen content was maintained at 3% by a third treatment, intramuscular injection of zinc-glucagon, 1 mg three times a day for 24 days. Any positive effect of these treatments remains doubtful. On the other hand, the poor clinical results following the treatments might have been related to the advanced state of cirrhosis before their initiation.

A study by Starzl’s group suggests that liver transplantation in GSD-IV results in resorption of extrahepatic deposits of amylopectin, possibly by systemic microchimerism .293
