Do You Really Lose A Pound Of Fat For Every 3500 Calories You Burn

How Many Calories to Lose 1 Pound of Body Fat?

Years ago, scientists played around with a pound of squishy, slimy human fat and found that it contained 3,500 calories of energy.

Butsorry to break it to youburning a pound of fat isn’t as simple as burning through 3,500 calories.

Consider the following and infuriating scenario: Two men go on an exercise and eating plan so that they consume 3,500 fewer calories per week than they burn. One man has five pounds to lose the other has 50. At the end of one week, the leaner guy might lose about half a poundand a third of the weight will be from muscle. Meanwhile, the obese guy will have lost more than three pounds, mostly from fat and water.

From the Editors of Details

“There’s tremendous variability in how a 3,500 caloric deficit affects different people,” says Pamela Peeke, M.D., M.P.H., senior science adviser at Elements Behavioral Health and author of The Hunger Fix.

Why’s that? Well, one huge factor determining the results of our dieters is body composition. “The more fat a person has to give, the quicker he will lose weight and weight from fat,” Peeke explains. Meanwhile, when you get closer to your body weight, your body holds on to fat stores for dear life and sacrifices muscle over fat, she says. The body is perpetually afraid that it will starve it’s perhaps biology’s least-sexy-ever survival mechanism.

Meanwhile, how you try to hit your caloric deficit has a huge impact on whether you lose weight from muscle, fat, or just water.

How Many Calories Are In A Pound

In simplest terms, losing fateven just a poundmeans taking in fewer calories and doing more physical activity. Theres been much ado about how many calories make a pound. The number of calories in a pound is far from set in stone. There is an adage that a 3,500 caloric deficit is needed to lose one pound, and this is a good average, but height and weight matter too, explains Holly Lofton, MD, director of the Medical Weight Management Program at NYU Langone in New York City. There is likely no single answer as to how many calories youd have to skip to lose one pound, since the number of calories in a pound can vary greatly depending on the person, but we do have a ballpark. Youd need a deficit of 2,000 to 4,000 calories depending on persons build, Dr. Lofton says.

For some context, a McDonalds Quarter Pounder with cheese has 530 calories add fries for another 230 and a sugary soda for 70 more.

Protein is also key here because its super thermogenic, adds Jason Ewoldt, RDN, LD, a wellness dietitian at the Mayo Clinic Health Living Program in Rochester, Minnesota. This is a science-y way of saying that protein turns up the heat in our bodys furnace, which increases our metabolism and our ability to burn fat.

Based on these recommendations, 200 grams of protein per day is safe only for people weighing more than 181 pounds.

Problem #: Weight Isnt Only Body Fat

The 3500 calorie rule applies strictly to one pound of body fat.

The problem, however, is that we track losses and gains of body fat by tracking our body weight, and weight can be a lot of things besides strictly body fat.

    For example

    • Stomach Content

Why does this matter? Because we never lose or gain only body fat. The other things on this list are constantly being lost and gained right along with it.

For this reason, our body weight rarely changes at a perfect 1:1 ratio to our body fat. In fact, it can sometimes be off by a significant amount.

For example, its extremely common for a person to lose body fat but yet see their body weight stay exactly the same or sometimes even go up! In many cases, this scenario can last for weeks at a time thereby causing the person to falsely believe their progress has stalled all while fat is still being lost just fine .

Whats happening in this scenario is that they are gaining something else that is counterbalancing their weight on the scale , thus preventing their fat loss progress from actually showing.

This is why its so common for people to gain 2-5lbs overnight after one bad day of eating. Theyll then think oh no, I gained 2-5lbs of fat in a day!!when in reality, all they actually gained is 2-5lbs of temporary water weight because theres no way they ate the insane 7000 17,500 additional calories necessary for 2-5lbs of actual body fat to be gained in a 24-hour period.

    Problem #: Metabolic Rate Changes

The next big problem with this 3500 calorie rule is the fact that metabolic rate changes because the human body adapts to maintain homeostasis.

What does that mean in plain English, you ask?

Let me give you a few examples.

    Example A

Lets pretend some person eats 3500 excess calories over the span of a week and should therefore end up gaining exactly one pound of fat. Lets also pretend the previous two problems dont actually exist, so the only weight they will gain or lose is strictly body fat.

Even under these nonexistent conditions, this person STILL wouldnt gain exactly 1lb.

  • Because the Thermic Effect Of Food will increase. These are the calories your body burns digesting the foods you eat, and when you eat more food, you naturally end up burning more calories due to an increase in TEF. Granted, this isnt going to be a hugely significant calorie burn, but its still enough to throw things off and make that 3500 calorie surplus something less than 3500 calories. Which means something less than 1lb of fat would be gained.
  • Example B

Now lets reverse the scenario and pretend some person eats 3500 fewer calories over the span of a week and should therefore end up losing exactly one pound of fat. And lets continue to pretend that the previous two problems with water weight and muscle dont actually exist, so body fat is all that can be lost or gained.

Guess what? This person STILL wouldnt lose exactly 1lb.

    Reduce Your Calorie Intake

Reducing the number of calories you take in during the day can be an important part of any weight loss plan. However, it is important to provide your body with the fuel it needs to run effectively.

Cutting too many calories can slow your metabolism and makes it even more difficult to lose weight. Highly calorie-restrictive diets can also lead to additional muscle loss, which can further hinder your weight loss efforts.

Eat a well-balanced diet, even when you are cutting calories. Eliminating empty calories from junk food and focusing on nutritionally dense calories can help.

    Single Subject Weight Change Predictor

This great weight loss tool was developed by the Pennington Biomedical Research Center.

Similar to The Body Weight Planner, it can accurately calculate weight loss based on your exercise level and diet.

This is an Excel-based file and program that you can download onto your computer.

It is also available as a Java-based program.

Once you have the program, you input values such as your gender, age, height, the number of days you want to achieve your goal weight in, etc.

The program then formulates its prediction based on your given values .

An interesting feature of this program is that it allows you to compare its dynamic model to the 3,500-calorie weight loss rule of thumb.

    Lets look at an example:

Say you are a female, 30 years old, your goal weight is 125 pounds and you want to lose the weight in 120 days.

You enter all of the values the program prompts you for .

Once it calculates, you can see a graph and table of predicted values.

You can also view a table that shows the dynamic model and the 3,500-calorie model side-by-side.

The dynamic model predicts that, after 120 days with a daily 500-calorie deficit, you would weigh 123 pounds, whereas the 3,500-calorie model overestimates weight loss and shows you would weigh 116.8 pounds in 120 days.

Although this is not a staggering difference, the final weigh-in number is enough to make you feel like you were not as successful in your weight loss journey as you were led to believe you would be.

How Many Calories Must You To Burn To Lose One Pound Of Fat

Now that we know how many calories are in a pound this doesn’t mean that’s how much you’ll need to workout to lose it. Your body doesn’t work in absolutes like that. It will actually take you burning more calories than 3,555 to lose a pound. In fact you might need to burn twice as many!Recent health data has possibly indicated that you have to burn around 7,000 calories for each pound of fat that you want to get rid of.Kevin Hall who is a mathematician, contributed to the research. Our body doesn’t work like that. Using a one size fits all random benchmark is useless. Trying to figure out exactly how many calories you’ll need to burn depends on a multitude of factors not limited to: individual body type, fat location, natural metabolism, typical diet, etc.In my opinion it is a waste of time to do an exact calculation, the best and simplest way to lose weight is just consume less than you burn. And over time you will shed the pounds but you wont get a headache trying too figure everything out.

So take this into your calories counting calculations! Don’t forget that not all calories are created equal, read more about this in my calorie counting post.

How Many Calories Do You Need

Many people seek to lose weight, and often the easiest way to do this is to consume fewer calories each day. But how many calories does the body actually need in order to be healthy? This largely depends on the amount of physical activity a person performs each day, and regardless of this, is different for all people â there are many different factors involved, not all of which are well-understood or known.

Some factors that influence the number of calories a person needs to remain healthy include age, weight, height, sex, levels of physical activity, and overall general health. For example, a physically active 25-year-old male that is 6 feet in height requires considerably higher calorie intake than a 5-foot-tall, sedentary 70-year-old woman. Though it differs depending on age and activity level, adult males generally require 2,000-3000 calories per day to maintain weight while adult females need around 1,600-2,400 according to the U.S Department of Health.

Where Does 3500 Calories Per Pound Come From

The idea of 3,500 calories in a pound is thought to have originated from Dr. Max Wishnofsky in 1958. He estimated 1 pound of fat was about 3,500 calories, and from then on the idea continued .

The number 3,500 is based on 1 pound equaling about 454 grams. There are about 9 calories in a gram of fat, so 454 x 9 = 4,086 calories.

Why isnt this the standard for calories in a pound of fat? Body fat is not purely fat it also has a mixture of other liquids, cells and some proteins.

So, 3,500 takes into account that body fat is not purely fat.

Do You Really Need To Eat 3500 Extra Calories To Gain A Pound Of Muscle

Much like adipose tissue containing more than pure fat, lean body mass contains more than just muscle protein. In fact, much of the weight in lean body tissues is water, an energy-devoid nutrient .Thus, lean body tissues are significantly less energy-dense than adipose tissue.

It’s estimated that one pound of muscle tissue contains the energy equivalent of 800 calories .

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean a calorie surplus of 800 will translate to one pound of muscle gain. If you sit on the couch all day and eat an extra 800 calories than you burn, the excess energy won’t all go towards muscle protein synthesis.

And as you may know, muscle protein synthesis is effectively “capped” every time we eat a meal . Once amino acids reach a saturation point in the blood, the surplus is directed towards other biological necessities.

What this tells us is that eating 3,500 more calories than you expend in a condensed time-frame will lead to considerable fat gain.
