Oatmeal is known as a hot cereal, but a wonderful thing happens when you combine dry oats, yogurt or milk, fruit, and chia seeds in a container in the fridge, says Snyder. After several hours , the oats absorb the liquid, plump up and soften into a familiar texture, and become overnight oats. These are eaten cold. The benefit is that theres little prep, you dont have to cook a thing, it switches up the style of oats to add variety, and theyre perfect as a snack. I like to make overnight oats in to-go coffee cups, which I could just grab and head out the door, Snyder says.

Is Oat Milk Good For You

Many nondairy milks have nutrients added, like calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. If you are switching from cow’s milk to a plant-based milk, look for brands that supply a comparable amount of these nutrients.

Most types of cows milk are fortified with vitamin D in the US, which is a good thing because it essentially wiped out rickets in the country.

And vitamin B12 is naturally found only in animal products, so if you are a vegan, supplementing with vitamin B12 is a good idea.

When you pursuing a vegan diet Its hard to get some of those vitamins and minerals through other consumptions and so we fortify with the vitamin and mineral blend just to be able to help them out, said Messersmith.

Oatly’s fortified oat milk contains vitamin D calcium , and vitamin B12 , although not as much protein and more carbs than some other milks.

However, the company isnt really trying to match the nutritional profile of dairy or other milks, Messersmith said.

At the end of the day, Oatly was founded to try to help accelerate the adoption of a plant-based diet, which is really good from a sustainability and climate change perspective, he said.

How Much Fiber Is In Oat Milk

If you’re looking to get more fiber, milk is probably not the food you should be relying on. But oat milk does have some.

Oat milk also retains some of the healthful fiber found in oats, although it only supplies about 2 grams per cup, said Sass.

Pea milk, flax, almond, cashew, hemp, coconut, soy, and cows milk all have 1 gram of fiber or less per cup.

One Percent Reduced Fat Milk vs. Two Percent Reduced Fat Milk : Fresh Kitchen
Calories
  • 12 grams of carbohydrates in the form of lactose
  • 8 grams of protein

None of the milks natural components are removed. As you can see, whole milk is high in natural proteins, fat, and calcium. Milk sold in the United States is usually fortified with vitamin A and vitamin D, as well.

Other cows milk has the same amount of carbohydrates and protein, with some or all of the fat removed. While whole milk has 150 calories in one cup, 1 percent milk has 110 calories, and skim milk has just 80 calories.

Fat-free milk is significantly lower in calories than whole milk. However, the removal of fat decreases the amount of certain nutrients in the milk, including vitamins E and K.

Lactose-free milk is processed to break down lactose, a natural sugar found in milk products.

Lactose-free milk is also a good source of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals. The total and saturated fat contents of lactose-free milk vary, as it comes in 2 percent, 1 percent, and fat-free varieties.

Almond milk is made from ground almonds and filtered water. It may also contain starches and thickeners to improve its consistency and shelf life.

People who are allergic to almonds or nuts should avoid almond milk.

Almond milk is typically lower in calories than other milks, as long as its unsweetened. Its also free of saturated fat and is naturally lactose-free.

Per cup, unsweetened almond milk has:

  • about 30 to 60 calories
  • 1 gram of carbohydrates
  • 1 gram of protein

How Many Carbohydrates Are In Oat Milk

If you keep an eye on your carbohydrate intake, you should know that oat milk has more carbs than some other milks. It is definitely higher in carbs compared to cows milk or other nut milks, said Sheth.

The unsweetened version contains about 16 grams of carbs per cup, said Sass. So it’s higher in carbs than, say, unsweetened almond milk, which typically provides 1 gram of carb per cup, she said.

Carbs can provide energy and other benefits, though, so if thats what you want, it might be just the thing for you.

Because it does provide more carbs without being sweetened, I do recommend it pre-exercise, either in coffee or a smoothie, Sass said.

How Many Calories Are In Oat Milk

A few calories here or there generally dont make that much of a difference, but FYI, here are the details.

One cup of unsweetened oat milk is about 120 calories, compared to about 30 to 40 calories in almond milk.

In contrast, a cup of whole cows milk has 150 and the skim version of cows milk has 90 calories. The unsweetened version of soy milk has roughly 70 calories per cup, flax milk has 25 to 60, coconut milk has 45, and pea milk has 70. Again, check the label, because it can vary.

Why Is Oat Milk Popular

Oat milk isnt really new, even if it wasnt on your radar until recently. Its been around for years. One reason for the surge in interest was due to clever marketing by the Swedish company Oatly.

Oatly has done a very good job in launching their brand, which I think has raised new awareness about oat milk, Sass said.

Oatly was founded in the 1990s, but started marketing its product in the US in late 2016 in specialty coffee shops, which gave it an air of exclusivity. It only became available in grocery stores in early 2018.

Coffee shops were selling it over the counter with like a black market for oat milk because it wasnt available anywhere, which was amazing, said Mike Messersmith, the New Yorkbased general manager for Oatly. We were like, okay, well maybe we should start selling it in grocery stores.

There are other brands, too, like Elmhurst and Pacific Foods. You can now find oat milk at FreshDirect, ShopRite, Target, Wegmans, Whole Foods, and on , among other places.

But it’s often in short supply. There was no unflavored oat milk at my local Whole Foods, so I bought the chocolate version.

If you are a DIY type, you can try this oat milk recipe or this almond milk recipe.

Is Oat Milk Good For People With Nut Allergies Is It Gluten Free

This is one area where oat milk is a winner. If you cant do dairy because you are allergic or choose not to drink it, or if you have a soy or nut allergy that rules out almond or soy milk, then you might want to consider oat milk.

The main advantage of oat milk is that it’s nut-free, because many people also struggle with nut allergies or intolerances, Sass said.

Oats are naturally free of gluten, and Oatlys milk is indeed gluten-free.

Can You Substitute 2% Milk For Whole Milk

Regarding cooking and baking, 2% milk can be used as a 1:1 substitute for recipes that call for whole milk. Whole milk is slightly richer than 2%, but you wont notice a huge difference in taste in most cases. Substitute 2% milk for whole milk in your overall diet can also be a good choice if youre looking to reduce how much fat you consume daily.

Milk & Dairy Products Calories

Milk is a nutritious liquid that can be harvested from many animals, but the most commonly consumed milk is from cows. Therefore, unless otherwise noted, the dairy products in this calorie chart are made with cow milk. Dairy contains a good balance of fat, carbohydrates, and protein, and its also a valuable source of calcium, riboflavin, and vitamin B12. Whole milk has equal amounts of fat and protein, but other milk varieties like skim have some or all fat removed, reducing calories as well. On the other hand, dairy products like heavy cream and buttermilk have higher amounts of fat. The main component of milk is lactose, a natural sugar that many peoples digestive systems are sensitive to. Vegan plant-based milks, including almond milk and coconut milk, are good substitutes, although they have different nutritional value from animal milk. Check the nutrition label on the carton or can for specific information regarding fats, protein, and carbohydrates in dairy alternatives.

Youre Sticking To Water When Making Oats

EVER BEEN A MILKAHOLIC? (Skim, 1%, 2%, Whole) – Dr Alan Mandell, DC

If you love the way oatmeal tastes when its made with water and oats, continue to make it as you wish. But dont be afraid to experiment with dairy and nondairy milk, says the Seattle-based registered dietitian-nutritionist Ginger Hultin, the owner of Ginger Hultin Nutrition and the author of the e-book Anti-Inflammatory Plant-Based Eating 101.

These liquids do add calories: 37 per cup for unsweetened almond milk, according to the USDA, and around 105 for soy or low-fat cows milk. Your choice depends on your goal. If youre aiming to make your bowl creamier for fewer calories, opt for almond milk. If youre looking to add in protein, try soy or low-fat cows . Along with that, any dairy or fortified nondairy milk will add in extra minerals, so youll get a boost of nutrients, too, says Hultin.

Variation In Saturated Fat

Animal fats, such as the fat in milk, contain saturated fats. These fats are particularly detrimental to your health because they contribute to high cholesterol, which increases your risk of heart attack and stroke. According to the American Heart Association, you should eat no more than 16 grams of saturated fat per day on a 2,000-calorie diet. Choosing 1 percent helps you lower your intake of saturated fat. It contains only 1.5 grams per cup, whereas 2 percent milk has 3 grams. But both types of reduced-fat milk contain less saturated fat than whole milk, which has about 4.5 grams per cup.

Is 2% Milk Watered Down

Non Fat Milk Nutrition Facts

Despite what many claim, 2% milk is not a watered-down version of whole milk. Reduced-fat milk, like 2% or skim, is made by allowing whole milk to separate for a period of time. The cream and fat of the milk will eventually rise to the top, which is then skimmed off. Dairy processors will add fat back into the milk after calculating the weight of fat needed.
