Is A Margarita Healthier Than Beer

How To Make A Keto Margarita | Keto Margarita Recipe | Low Carb Margarita Recipe

Whether or not a margarita is healthier than beer depends on several factors. Generally speaking, a margarita is considered a healthier beverage compared to most beers as it has fewer calories and sugar.

That being said, not all margaritas are created equal. Store-bought and pre-made margaritas often contain a lot of added sugars, syrups, and artificial flavors that can add up to large amounts of calories and sugar.

Similarly, certain craft beers can contain more calories and sugars than typical margaritas. So when it comes to really assessing the relative health factors between a margarita and a beer, its important to take a look at the ingredients of each drink.

Lack Of Margarita Nutrition Info

It’s hard to know about the calories in a margarita at your favorite Mexican restaurant because most of them don’t list their nutritional information for their cocktails.

A margarita’s nutrition panel will vary based on the ingredients used, but a typical margarita â according to the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority â will use a combination of tequila, triple sec and lime juice. If syrup or another type of sweetener is used, that will mean there are more empty carbs in the margarita.

According to the National Institutes of Health, a 1.5-ounce serving of tequila has about 97 calories, but it echoes the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s estimate that a 4-ounce serving will have only 168 calories.

Mayo Clinic lists a recipe for an alcohol-free margarita, which will cut down on the calories in the margarita but not necessarily on the carbs in the margarita: Using a simple syrup made from water and sugar, this margarita recipe has 68 calories, most of them from its 13 grams of sugar content, in a single 8-ounce glass.

There are other ways to improve a margarita from a nutrition perspective. Although the nutritional information is not available on its website, Chevy’s lists a “skinny” margarita made from Patrón Silver, fresh lime juice and agave nectar.

Do Margaritas On The Rocks Have Less Sugar

Yes, margaritas on the rocks typically have less sugar compared to other margaritas due to the lack of a sugar-based mixer. The classic margarita on the rocks typically includes only four ingredients: tequila, Triple Sec, lime juice and agave nectar.

Agave nectar is a low glycemic sweetener which is naturally sourced from the agave plant and contains fewer calories and carbohydrates than other sweeteners. The combination of these ingredients significantly lowers the sugar content of the margarita compared to other variations of the drink, such as frozen margaritas which are usually blended with other mixers such as sweet-and-sour and fruit juice.

Furthermore, some establishments may choose to add a small amount of sugar to the recipe to make it sweeter, so if you are trying to minimize your sugar intake it is best to ask your bartender if they add it before ordering.

How Many Carbohydrates Are In A Margarita

How To Make A Healthier Margarita

Theres no need to worry about occasionally indulging in a margarita. But there are ways to make a healthier version if you wish.

First, try making a margarita from scratch at home. It will likely have fewer calories and less sugar versus a premade mix.

Homemade margaritas are also healthier than restaurant margaritas, since restaurant portions tend to be much larger. And depending on the restaurant, they may use a premade mix high in added sugars.

Reducing the amount of sugar in your margarita is another way to make a healthier version. Try swapping an ounce of orange liqueur for a teaspoon of light agave nectar and an ounce of orange juice. That nixes about 5 grams of sugar.

Another option is to only use light agave nectar or honey in place of orange liqueur and skip the orange juice, saving another three grams of sugar.

Keep in mind that agave nectar and honey have about the same number of calories and grams of sugar. If you want to skip sugar all together, replace the orange liqueur or agave with another sweetener like stevia or monk fruit.

You can learn about other sweetener options here.

Or make a fruit-flavored drink, like a strawberry margarita, using real strawberries to sweeten the drink. Fruit is naturally sweet, and it provides vitamins, minerals, and a some fiber. Consider using fresh or frozen fruit, skipping the agave and honey.

Finally, using less tequila than the standard two ounces will reduce the number of calories from alcohol and your alcohol intake.

What Is The Difference Between A Skinny Margarita Keto Margarita And A Regular Margarita

    Keto Low

REGULAR MARGARITA This is what you are gonna find at a lot of restaurants, especially chain restaurants. They use a pre-made margarita mix, thats added to the tequila. There are a few different brands of margarita mixes out there but Im gonna use the Jose Cuervo mix as an example.

For a 4-oz serving of this margarita mix has just over 100 calories, which all come from carbohydrates. Each serving has 24 g of carbs! Its basically a blend of water, corn syrup, and sugar.

SKINNY MARGARITA Its name basically gives it awayits a lower-calorie version of a regular margarita. Asking for your margarita to be Skinny means that instead of adding that gross sweet syrupy mix, they will keep it nice and simple with just 3 ingredients: tequila, fresh lime juice, and an orange-flavored liqueur.

Getting it made Skinny is going to save you calories, but not carbs. The orange-flavored liqueur such as Triple Sec, Cointreau and Grand Marnier is where your sugar and carbs are going to be.

KETO MARGARITA This is still a lower-calorie margarita. It has tequila, fresh lime juice, but instead of having an orange-flavored liqueur, Ive been using an orange-flavored seltzer. It has zero calories but has a nice little orange flavor. If you like your margs a bit sweeter then using a zero-calorie sweetener is what you want to do.

Our Keto Margarita recipe only has 1.2 Net Carbs, a major difference between this and a regular one.
