When you are ready to start eating after a shorter fast, we suggest that you try not to undo all the metabolic benefits youve gained from your fast. This means staying away from junk food and sugar, instead breaking your fast with low glycemic foods like cooked veggies, berries, or poultry/fish. The second potential reason for IFs success is its ability to lower insulin levels. Studies show that fasting tends to lower insulin levels, although it is not scientifically clear the extent to which lower insulin levels can directly explain better weight loss.

However, a 2020 study from Dr. Ethan Weiss and colleagues created some doubt about whether short fasts of 16 hours, in the absence of any other dietary modification, can lead to improved weight loss and metabolic health. The studys authors concluded that time restricted eating was no better than eating throughout the day for weight loss.

We wrote about this study, noting that the fasting group did not reduce caloric intake, which puts it at odds with other studies that have suggested at least part of the benefit of fasting comes from reduced caloric intake.

But even though human data on longevity are lacking, the other benefits of IF and its ease of use likely make it worth a try.

There are many different variations of intermittent fasting as well. Dr. Dom DAgostino, a well-known ketogenic diet researcher, suggests doing a longer intermittent fast for 3 days, 3 times a year. This means not eating for 3 days, and eating normally until the next fast.

Another way to try fasting for yourself is by incorporating intermittent fasts of 16 or more hours per day into your lifestyle. This is a much more accessible strategy that allows you to experience many of the benefits of taking a short break from calories.

Despite the simplicity of this concept, it may not be readily apparent how beneficial intermittent fasting can be for you, especially if you are already benefiting from the ketogenic diet.

Is Intermittent Fasting And A Low Carb Diet For Everyone

Intermittent fasting and low-carb diets are generally safe to pursue and can give you some great results and health benefits fairly quickly.

However, if you fall into some categories of health that are considered more vulnerable, it is not wise to combine these diet plans without medical advice, or under the supervision of your healthcare provider.

This includes persons who identify with any of the following states:

  • A history of eating disorders or a current eating disorder.
  • Below the age of 18.
  • Chronic diseases.
  • Suffering from chronic conditions such as Alzheimers disease.
  • Taking certain prescription medications.
  • Those at a higher risk of heart disease.

How long is intermittent fasting sustainable? When it comes to intermittent fasting for beginners, 24 hours or fewer is a safe limit.

Those more experienced with fasting may go 48-72 hours, or even longer however, youll have to experiment and work up to a long fasting window, and stop if it doesnt feel right or keeps you from doing daily tasks.

You can incorporate some form of fasting into your schedule every day, as long as you stay healthy and nourished with the right foods during your eating windows.
