What Should I Eat To Break My Fast
When you are ready to start eating after a shorter fast, we suggest that you try not to undo all the metabolic benefits youve gained from your fast. This means staying away from junk food and sugar, instead breaking your fast with low glycemic foods like cooked veggies, berries, or poultry/fish. If youve been doing a longer fast, it is often a good idea to slowly awaken your digestive system with something that is easy to digest, like a smoothie, or a broth/soup.
Keto Guide To Intermittent Fasting
Updated Oct 4th, 2021 Written by Craig Clarke
Intermittent fasting has become an immensely popular dieting strategy. Although it may seem like another diet fad, there are several reasons why skipping meals can be so helpful for many of us.
The first is that intermittent fasting can help you bust through weight loss plateaus. Down to those last couple of pounds, or been stuck at the same number for weeks? Give this a try.
The other reasons are for the sheer health benefits of fasting. Better metabolic adaptions, improved muscle growth and synthesis, and improved responses to post workout meals when you work out. Even longer life spans have been shown in worms yeah, I know its only worms, but still!
Its also shown to boost mental clarity and give more focus during the day.
And this is just a brief overview of what the research on fasting has found. For an in-depth look at the benefits of intermittent fasting, you can head over to the more scientific post I did on it over here.
On the other hand, If you are looking for a meal plan, shopping list, and other practical strategies thatll help you experience the benefits of the keto diet and fasting at the same time, continue reading below.

The Possible Health Benefits Of A Keto Intermittent Fasting Diet
There isnt research on the health effects of doing keto and IF together, but its clear that ketone levels increase when the plans are combined. This may help accelerate weight loss, says Dr. DAgostino. Still, everyone responds differently, so this may not be true across the board, he says.
Shemek has all of her clients use keto or the IF and keto combo. My clients are typically all prediabetic and overweight. Once they see and feel what eating in this way does for them including regulating their blood sugar levels they are able to stay on an IF and keto plan easily. The success of the combined approach reinforces their committment, she says.
One interesting way that low-carb IF diets are being studied outside of weight loss is for cognitive health. Richard Isaacson, MD, director of the Alzheimers Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYorkPresbyterian in New York City, says that doing a low-carb, time-restricted IF may be beneficial for calming down insulin pathways and letting the brain benefit from cleaner burning fuel, which may offer benefits for people with Alzheimers disease.
Does Intermittent Fasting Work For Weight Loss
Is it practical to do intermittent fasting for weight loss? Absolutely. Studies show that intermittent fasting can naturally restrict calorie intake and appetite, which can lead to weight loss .
However, intermittent fasting also works on a hormonal level by releasing more norepinephrine, a fat burning hormone. This hormonal shift can increase your resting metabolic rate , which means you can burn more calories, more efficiently even in a resting state.
By restricting calories and increasing the rate at which you burn calories, an intermittent fasting schedule can lead to weight loss.

This Can Be A Very Low
Keeping your carb count near 20 reduces your calorie consumption too. Carb-heavy foods are some of the most calorie-dense foods we eat, mainly because we eat a lot of them. If you cut carbs, you dramatically reduce your possible calorie intake.
Some days, I struggled to get over 1,200 calories. For my goal of 1,800 calories, I fell short almost every day. Thats enough of a calorie deficit to produce weight loss, even without the low-carb count.

What Does Intermittent Fasting Do
There are different mechanisms to account for the success of intermittent fasting.
First, skipping meals and cutting out snacking naturally reduces the amount of calories one eats during the day. Thats why it is important to try not to eat more during your eating window to make up for the missed meal. That would negate one of the main benefits of fasting!
The second potential reason for IFs success is its ability to lower insulin levels. Studies show that fasting tends to lower insulin levels, although it is not scientifically clear the extent to which lower insulin levels can directly explain better weight loss.
However, a 2020 study from Dr. Ethan Weiss and colleagues created some doubt about whether short fasts of 16 hours, in the absence of any other dietary modification, can lead to improved weight loss and metabolic health. The studys authors concluded that time restricted eating was no better than eating throughout the day for weight loss.
We wrote about this study, noting that the fasting group did not reduce caloric intake, which puts it at odds with other studies that have suggested at least part of the benefit of fasting comes from reduced caloric intake.
But even though human data on longevity are lacking, the other benefits of IF and its ease of use likely make it worth a try.
The Benefits Of Pairing Keto Plus Intermittent Fasting
Now that you can see the similarities between keto and intermittent fasting, youre probably wondering, What happens when I combine these two metabolic powerhouses?
All the benefits of IF are increased if you also pay attention to what you eat during the eating window, explains Bowden.
Keto is known to accomplish many of the same goals goals so adhering to a keto way of eating during your eating window is a terrific way to accelerate your results, Bowden says. Heres what you might experience:

Intermittent Fasting Why Meal Timing Matters
Simply put, intermittent fasting is the dietary strategy of restricting your food consumption to a specific window of time. For example, one of the most common intermittent fasting approaches is fasting during an 18-hour window of time and eating during the 6-hour window of time that is left in the day.
Lets say your last meal was at 6 pm last night and you ate nothing else after that. To implement an intermittent fast, simply restrict eating until 12 pm the next afternoon . To do this every day, only eat between 12 pm and 6 pm and fast for the remainder of the day.
There are many different variations of intermittent fasting as well. Dr. Dom DAgostino, a well-known ketogenic diet researcher, suggests doing a longer intermittent fast for 3 days, 3 times a year. This means not eating for 3 days, and eating normally until the next fast.
Another way to try fasting for yourself is by incorporating intermittent fasts of 16 or more hours per day into your lifestyle. This is a much more accessible strategy that allows you to experience many of the benefits of taking a short break from calories.
Despite the simplicity of this concept, it may not be readily apparent how beneficial intermittent fasting can be for you, especially if you are already benefiting from the ketogenic diet.
Is Intermittent Fasting And A Low Carb Diet For Everyone
Intermittent fasting and low-carb diets are generally safe to pursue and can give you some great results and health benefits fairly quickly.
However, if you fall into some categories of health that are considered more vulnerable, it is not wise to combine these diet plans without medical advice, or under the supervision of your healthcare provider.
This includes persons who identify with any of the following states:
- A history of eating disorders or a current eating disorder.
- Below the age of 18.
- Chronic diseases.
- Suffering from chronic conditions such as Alzheimers disease.
- Taking certain prescription medications.
- Those at a higher risk of heart disease.

How Long Should You Intermittent Fast
How long is intermittent fasting sustainable? When it comes to intermittent fasting for beginners, 24 hours or fewer is a safe limit.
Those more experienced with fasting may go 48-72 hours, or even longer however, youll have to experiment and work up to a long fasting window, and stop if it doesnt feel right or keeps you from doing daily tasks.
You can incorporate some form of fasting into your schedule every day, as long as you stay healthy and nourished with the right foods during your eating windows.
Wont Intermittent Fasting Burn Muscle
That depends on the person and the duration of the fast. During fasting, the body first breaks down glycogen into glucose for energy. After that, the body increases body fat breakdown to provide energy.
Excess amino acids are also used for energy, but the body does not burn its own muscle for fuel unless it has to.49
Some studies, however, suggest that leaner individuals are at higher risk of lean body mass loss, and even reduced metabolic rate. Yet it appears this is less of a concern with overweight subjects.50

Youll Lose Less Muscle
One common criticism lobbed at intermittent fasting enthusiasts is that it has the potential to cause muscle loss. This is a valid point. If you are insufficiently fat-adapted, your glucose requirements will remain elevated when fasting, and you may break down muscle tissue for the amino acids to convert to glucose.
Luckily, ketones spare muscle tissue by reducing your need for glucose. It turns out that a fair number of tissues that would otherwise run on glucose can run on ketones. Being in a ketogenic or low-carb fat-burning state before you fast accentuates this effect. Its no wonder that the studies mentioned in the last section found that weight loss via low-carb dieting and fasting was entirely from body fat.

Expect A Greater Weight Loss When Combining A Low Carb Diet And Fasting
Many health-conscious people turn to a low-carb intermittent fasting plan to help with weight loss, but does it really work?
The answer is, yes! The ketones induced by a low-carb diet and ketosis not only burn fat for better energy levels, but actually remove those fat molecules from being stored around the body.
So, instead of just losing water weight and then hitting a weight loss plateau, fueling with a low carb eating pattern outside of fasting hours promotes physical fat loss. This means you can drop more pounds with intermittent fasting and keto than you could on a crash diet.
Additionally, studies under medical supervision have shown that a low carbohydrate diet works to reduce your appetite and diminish hunger cravings.
Due to the complex and balanced meals included in eating a low-carb diet, people tend to feel fuller for longer, instead of experiencing blood sugar spikes and dives throughout the day.
It not only makes it easier for you to fast for longer stretches but also to avoid eating extraneous meals on alternate day fasting-free periods.
Why Combining Intermittent Fasting With Keto Has Become Popular For Weight Loss
Doing keto or IF can help with weight loss in the short term, though each diet is very restrictive, so they certainly arent for everyone.
But how about combining them? Could two be better than one?
First, in some experts view, it does make sense to pair the two approaches. The keto diet increases levels of ketones in the body during times of fasting, ketones are also increased. The brain will rely less on glucose for energy when in a state of nutritional ketosis. Therefore, the transition into a fasted state during the day eventually becomes seamless after eating low-carb or ketogenic for a few weeks, says Dominic DAgostino, PhD, associate professor at the University of South Florida in Tampa and founder of KetoNutrition.org.
This is a strategy that practitioners counsel patients on at the Cleveland Clinics Functional Ketogenics Program. Adding intermittent fasting can take things up to the next level, says the Clinics Logan Kwasnicka, a certified physician assistant at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. That next level may be overcoming a weight loss plateau, as people may eat fewer calories when doing IF. It can also be a natural progression from a keto diet for those who feel satiated eating so much fat and arent bothered by shrinking their eating window.
