Plain Ol Shake Shack Hamburger
Surprisingly, Shake Shacks vegetarian option, the Shroom Burger, is not the healthiest option on the menu. Youre better off having a standard Hamburger . Its higher in fat than your standard ground beef patty, but not terrible at 17g. Plus, its a good source of protein and low on carbs, and you have the option of adding fresh lettuce, tomato and pickles. For a drink, skip the milkshake and opt for unsweetened iced tea or better yet: water instead.
Black Bean Crunchwrap Supreme 510 Calories
This next option has more calories, but it is a lot more filling. With black beans and cheese sauce mixed with salad and sour cream in a hard crunchy taco, wrapped in a soft tortilla, this option has a good balance of all the different food groups, and that is why it is so healthy.
Its no wonder the Crunchwrap is one of the most popular menu items at Taco Bell.
Starbucks Egg & Gouda Protein Box
If youre getting anything fancier than a latte at Starbucks, chances are your coffee order is giving you way more than enough sugar already. So, if youre craving a snack to go with it, avoid the temptation of pastries , and fill up on this neat little package of fruit, cheese and hardboiled eggs instead.

Another dollar menu item, this mini quesadilla is the perfect compromise. The actual chicken quesadilla, though way more filling, has a lot more of everything bad for you . Don’t worry, the mini version still comes with the cheesy jalapeño sauce.

Chicken Or Steak Tacos Fresco Style
Taco Bell has done a really good job with trying to offer cleaner options on their fast-food menu. I would order either the Soft Shredded Chicken or Steak Tacos “Fresco Style,” which replaces mayo-based sauces, cheeses, reduced-fat sour cream, and guacamole on almost any menu item with freshly prepared pico de gallo. Both the steak and shredded chicken offer high amounts of protein while keeping the sugar low. Double up on the lettuce and pico de gallo. You can also ask for an empty bowl and turn the two tacos into a leaner, cleaner version of their taco bowls .

Honestly, any menu item from Taco Bell can be made more nutritious by making it fresco style. Its like a not-so-secret life hack to having Taco Bell thats still delicious but with a lot less fat. The same applies to their burrito supreme when made fresco style, the entire thing comes out to 340 calories with 9 grams of fiber and 16 grams of protein. Yes, there’s quite a bit of fat, too, but it’s much better than if you included the sour cream and cheese.

Chicken Soft Taco Fresco Style
150 calories, 6 grams of fat, 2 grams of fiber, 9 grams of protein
Chicken soft tacos are like the chicken noodle soup of the fast food world: reliable, comforting, and always tasty. Taco Bells, when created fresco style, rings in at a mere 150 calories with 9 grams of protein. Slather on some hot sauce and make your soft taco dreams come true.
Chicken Soft Shell Taco Plus Sides
If in a pinch and I need to order something at a fast-food restaurant like Taco Bell, I try to keep my order pretty simple. For example, I would stick with a Chicken Soft Taco with a side of guacamole and black beans versus options like the Double Decker Taco, which is double the calories. The side of guacamole and black beans adds healthy fat and fiber to the meal, which can increase satiety and make you feel more satisfied.

Spicy Tostada Or Power Menu Veggie Burrito
Full disclosure, I haven’t been to a Taco Bell since high school. I automatically went to the vegetarian menu and was pleasantly surprised by the options. I opted to skip the meat as a way to reduce the sodium and saturated fat content of the dish, but it should be noted that all of the dishes are heavy on the salt, even when you choose from the veggie options.
I would customize the Spicy Tostada and have it with black beans, avocado, extra lettuce, extra tomato, and pico de gallo. Another option is to customize the Power Menu Veggie Burrito. I’d remove the cheese and go easy on the avocado ranch sauce and add pickled jalapeños, lettuce, and tomato. The key is to boost the original offering with extra veggies and make mindful and intentional choices around what you add or remove.
Burrito Supreme With Chicken Or Steak
When you make a few adjustments to the classic burrito supreme at Taco Bell, you can turn an unhealthy menu item into a delicious diet-friendly meal.
Start by substituting the ground beef with grilled chicken or grilled steak to reduce the fat in the burrito.
Then, ask for the burrito to be made fresco style to replace the cheese and sour cream with low calorie diced tomatoes.

Power Menu Veggie Bowl
As with all fast-food chains, it’s best to avoid the meat- and animal-based products, which are not high quality. Taco Bell does offer more vegetable-based options than other fast-food chains. The Power Menu Veggie Bowl has black beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, and seasoned rice. I recommend ordering it without the sour cream and avocado ranch dressing. There are ingredients I normally avoid, including added sugars, natural flavors, canola oil, corn oil, and xanthan gum, but it’s better than other options. Taco Bell also offers a side of black beans as well as a side of black beans and rice, which are nice plant-based options.

How To Make A Taco Bell Order Healthier
As well as specifically ordering healthier options from Taco Bell, it is also possible to make your existing order healthier. So, if you do not want to change your order entirely, you are in the right place. Here are just a handful of the ways to make your Taco Bell order healthier and more nutritious:
- Swap Your Soda Instead of ordering your regular soda, swap it for a zero-calorie alternative, such as a diet or zero option. This will reduce the calories that you are taking in, and also reduce your sugar intake at the same time.
- Choose Nutritious Add-ons Ask for extra beans, meat, or guac to make your meal more nutritious. Beans and meat will improve your protein intake, and guac will improve your fat intake for a more balanced diet.
- Order Fresca Style This will remove the high-calorie components from your meal , and replace them with diced tomatoes. Making your meal a whole lot healthier.
Alternatively, if you do not want to impact your favorite order by modifying it, you might prefer to order something a little different. With that in mind, lets take a look at some of the healthiest options at Taco Bell.
Ordering Healthier At Taco Bell
Here are some ways that you can make the menu items at Taco Bell more nutritious:
- Ask for extra meat or beans. This increases the calorie content but also the amount of protein, which makes the meal more filling .
- Ask for fresca-style. This replaces the cheese, sour cream, and mayo-based sauces with diced tomatoes, reducing menu items by a few hundred calories each.
- Ask for guacamole. The avocado used to make guacamole adds calories but is also an excellent source of healthy plant-based fats .
- Choose a zero-calorie drink. Most soft drinks are loaded with sugar and calories that can contribute to excess weight gain, so choose water, unsweetened tea, or soda instead .
- Pass on the sweets. Taco Bell offers frozen slushies and dessert items, but these get most of their calories from sugar, so its best to avoid them .
- Use the online calculator. Taco Bells website features a nutrition calculator that lets you plan and customize your meal to view the nutrition information. This can be helpful when planning a fast food meal to suit your eating plan or preferences .
Note that like most fast food, Taco Bell meals may not be suitable if youre on a sodium-restricted diet. Nearly all the meats, beans, sauces, tortillas, and shells are pre-made or pre-seasoned with large quantities of salt .

Technically the Nachos BellGrande are higher in calories, but those eat much more like a meal than a side.
Nacho Fries are back, baby! It seems that Taco Bell will forever be rotating Nacho Fries on and off the menu, but at the time of writing this, theyre back on the menu and deserve a shoutout.
Much like French fries at most fast-food restaurants, the amount of fries you receive is going to vary greatly. Consider these calories an estimate- and the same applies to the side of nachos, too.
If your server is in a good mood, you may get a much more generous serving on any given day, so the calories may be a bit higher.
I included bowls in this section because they didnt fit in anywhere else, but they are the closest thing to salad that Taco Bell currently offers.
If I were ordering a Power Bowl, Id opt to go with grilled chicken, and Id leave out the nacho cheese sauce and shredded cheese.
For me, cheese doesnt add a whole lot, so I dont mind leaving it out. Ill load up on salsa or pico de gallo instead .
Oh, and we obviously cant let this post end without mentioning the Cinnamon Twists. Are they the best dessert ever created? Possibly.
Its hard to beat cinnamon and sugar.
